Build the hero in the story. Build the hero outside of it.
Karate D&D is Balance Martial Arts & Gaming’s one-of-a-kind weekly program combining traditional Kinney Karate training with an ongoing Dungeons & Dragons campaign.
Every session begins in the dojo. Students train, sweat, improve, and work through the same martial arts curriculum we teach every day at Balance. Then they gather at the table, where their effort in class can echo into the game through rewards tailored to their own progress.
The idea is simple: when self-improvement becomes part of the adventure, people are more excited to keep going.
It is fitness, friendship, and heroic fantasy working together to make self-improvement more fun—and more likely to stick.
Whether you are brand new to martial arts, brand new to D&D, or already love both, Karate D&D offers a welcoming way to train, play, and grow alongside a committed group.

Why Karate D&D?
Many people want to train, improve their health, build confidence, and develop new skills—but consistency is hard. Good intentions do not always become habits, and habits are easier to build when people genuinely look forward to showing up.
Karate D&D was created around that idea.
The Karate D&D program was built to combine the physical and mental benefits of martial arts training with the emotional and community benefits of a great D&D table to create something that can excite the imagination and provide reliable motivation. Students are not just attending a class or showing up for a game night. They are taking part in a shared journey where growth in one space can matter in the other.
How the program works
Each week is a three-hour, once-a-week experience:
- 1 hour of Kinney Karate training — first, always
- 2 hours of Dungeons & Dragons play
The martial arts portion is not a simplified or themed workout. Karate D&D uses the same Kinney Karate curriculum taught in Balance’s standard program. Training stays real, practical, and consistent.
After class, the group transitions into an ongoing, curated D&D campaign guided by talented Dungeon Masters. The campaign is not a disconnected add-on; it is built to work alongside the training experience and help give members another reason to keep moving forward.

The game rewards the training
The defining feature of Karate D&D is the way progress in class can create opportunities in the game.
Rewards may be immediate and session-based—such as gaining advantage on Dexterity checks and saving throws after a breakthrough in balance—or they may reflect larger milestones earned through sustained effort over time.
In some cases, belt advancement can translate into meaningful character progression, including level-ups. Rewards are not generic or automatic. They are tailored to the student, tied to real improvement, and integrated into the story when appropriate.
The system is designed to reinforce:
- effort,
- consistency,
- focus,
- and personal growth.
It does not reward comparison or competition between students. Karate D&D is built around each participant’s own journey, with incentives awarded at the instructor’s discretion and used to strengthen the experience rather than replace the work.
New to karate? New to D&D? You belong here.
Karate D&D is designed for participants of any experience level, whether they are new to martial arts, new to Dungeons & Dragons, or experienced in either.
New martial arts students are supported through individualized coaching within a mixed-rank class structure led by highly experienced instructors.
New D&D players begin with a relaxed and informative Session Zero, where the basics are taught clearly and table expectations are established before the campaign begins.
Because every player is part of the martial arts program, the learning doesn't stop at the edge of the mats. It continues at the table where players are expected to learn how to be excited for others, share in achievement, and create a dynamic where everyone grows. The laughter is always joyous, never cruel.
Karate D&D is currently designed for older teens and adults. Families interested in a younger-player campaign are welcome to ask about future possibilities if enough interest develops.
What participants need
No special equipment is required at the start.
Over time, participants may choose to purchase personal D&D materials, and martial arts students will eventually need standard training gear as they progress. Nothing beyond a willingness to participate is required to get started.
Small tables. Ongoing campaigns.
Each campaign table is limited to 6 players to keep the experience personal, engaging, and consistent.
Karate D&D is charged monthly, with no long-term obligation. Campaigns do not have a fixed end date, and tables are intended to build continuity over time. Because of that, new players generally join at the start of a campaign or when a seat becomes available in an existing group.
That structure allows the campaign to feel like a real shared adventure rather than a drop-in game night, while still keeping the door open for new members when opportunities arise.
Built to create long-term growth
Karate D&D has already shown what this kind of program can do.
One early beta participant joined in his 60s as an experienced D&D player. Through the program, he continued training, earned his Black Belt, and is now positioned to become one of Karate D&D’s Dungeon Masters.
That story captures the heart of the program. Karate D&D is not simply about pairing two enjoyable activities. It is about creating a community and a structure that help people stay engaged long enough for meaningful growth to happen.
